Tattoo Aftercare Luxemburg: A Complete Guide to Perfect Healing
Getting a tattoo is only half the journey. What happens in the days and weeks that follow is just as important as the session itself. Proper aftercare is what separates a tattoo that heals beautifully and retains its depth and detail for years, from one that fades, blurs, or loses its vibrancy prematurely.
At Atlas Tattoo Studio, aftercare guidance is part of every appointment. Here is our complete guide to help your tattoo heal perfectly.
The First 24 Hours
Your artist will cover your fresh tattoo with a protective film or wrap before you leave the studio. This is a critical first step it protects the open skin from bacteria and external irritants.
What to do in the first 24 hours:
Keep the wrap on for the time recommended by your artist (typically 2–4 hours for standard film, or up to 3–5 days for second-skin/Saniderm-type film).
When you remove the wrap, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water an
a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your clean hands, never a cloth or sponge.Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub.
Apply a thin layer of unscented, alcohol-free moisturiser recommended.
What to avoid:
Direct sunlight on the fresh tattoo
Submerging in water (baths, pools, the sea)
Touching the tattoo with unwashed hands
Tight clothing rubbing against the area
Days 2–7: The Peeling Phase
During this stage, your tattoo will begin to peel similar to sunburn. This is completely normal and is a sign that your skin is healing. The key rule here: do not pick, scratch, or peel the skin.
Picking at peeling skin can pull out ink and cause patchy, uneven healing. It can also introduce bacteria and increase the risk of infection.
Daily routine during this phase:
Wash gently twice a day with lukewarm water and mild soap.
Pat dry carefully.
Apply a thin layer of moisturiser. Avoid over-moisturising the
skin needs to breathe.
The tattoo may feel itchy during this stage. This is normal.
Resist the urge to scratch; instead, gently tap the area if the sensation becomes uncomfortable.
Weeks 2–4:
Surface Healing
By the end of the second week, the surface of the skin should appear healed. The peeling will have stopped and the tattoo will look more settled. However, the deeper layers of skin are still regenerating and this is when many people make the mistake of neglecting their aftercare.
Continue moisturising daily and avoid prolonged sun exposure. If you must be outdoors, protect the tattoo with a high-SPF sunscreen (SPF 50 or above)
once it is fully surface-healed.
Long-Term Tattoo Care
A tattoo is a lifelong commitment, and so is caring for it. To keep your tattoo looking its best for years to come:
Moisturise regularly: Hydrated skin keeps ink looking vibrant. Make it part of your daily routine.
Use sun protection : UV rays are the single biggest cause of tattoo fading. Always apply sunscreen to exposed tattoos before spending time outdoors.
Stay hydrated : Healthy skin holds ink better. Drinking adequate water contributes to overall skin health.
Avoid extreme weight fluctuations : Significant changes in body weight can stretch or distort the skin, affecting the appearance of your tattoo over time.
